Philip Morris International Announces New $600 Million Facility in Aurora and Adams County

July 17, 2024

The Aurora Economic Development Council is thrilled to report Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI), a fortune 150 global company with nearly 80,000 employees worldwide, announced yesterday that it has selected Aurora for a new 600,000 square-foot western U.S. manufacturing and distribution hub. The $600 million project will create 500 new primary jobs with an average salary of $90,000, in addition to 1,000 construction jobs to build the manufacturing plant.

PMI’s U.S. affiliate, Swedish Match ZYN, plans to break ground on the new facility later this year and begin preliminary operations by the end of 2025 with regular production commencing in 2026.

“We worked with the company on a very specific vision that was needed in a very short timeframe. By giving our concierge-level customer service and utilizing our close relationships with our development and utility partners, Philip Morris International selected Aurora,” stated Wendy Mitchell, president and CEO of the Aurora Economic Development Council. “Our central location, diverse workforce, and development-ready Xcel Energy Certified Sites in our portfolio, makes Aurora and Adams County an excellent location for PMI to construct a manufacturing facility that will employ 500 people.”

Over the past 11 months, the Aurora EDC played a critical role in recruiting this significant project. The Aurora EDC team assisted with site selection, entitlements, due diligence, utilities, taxes, and workforce resources that ultimately helped convince PMI to select the City of Aurora and Adams County as their preferred location.

This project will produce millions in new tax revenues with an annual economic impact of $550 million that will significantly contribute to the City of Aurora, Adams County, and the State of Colorado economies.
